Sony has launched the beta testing phase for cloud streaming PS5 games, allowing select users to stream their games directly to their PS5 consoles. This beta service will be part of the PlayStation Plus Premium once it becomes widely available.

The list of supported titles will include PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue and Game Trials, as well as digital PS5 titles that players own. Users selected for the beta have reported that the service offers streaming options in various resolutions, including 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and even 4K. This is a significant advantage over Xbox Cloud Streaming, which currently does not offer a 4K option.

Sony stated that once the feature officially launches, cloud game streaming for supported PS5 titles will be available directly on the PS5 console. Premium members will enjoy the convenience of easily jumping into their favorite games without the need to download them onto their console.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan, previously mentioned that the company had aggressive plans in the cloud gaming space. Recognizing the increasing importance of mobility in gaming habits, Sony sees the cloud as a fundamental tool to exploit this trend. Ryan stated, ‘We do have some fairly interesting and quite aggressive plans to accelerate our initiatives in the space of the cloud that will unfold over the coming months.’

While Sony acknowledges the technical challenges of cloud-based gaming, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida expressed their willingness to tackle these challenges. He described cloud-based gaming as ‘tricky’ but a challenge they are eager to undertake.

With the introduction of the PS5 cloud streaming beta, Sony is positioned to expand its cloud gaming offerings and provide a seamless gaming experience for its users. As more games are released on the PS5 console, the company intends to add cloud streaming capabilities for PS5 titles along with existing streaming options for PS3, PS4, and classic titles. PlayStation fans can look forward to enjoying their favorite games anytime, anywhere, without the need for extensive downloads or physical media.
