Sony PS5 Update: Dolby Atmos Support and New Features | Gametides

Sony has released a new software update for the PlayStation 5, offering a range of new features and enhancements. One of the notable additions is the support for Dolby Atmos on compatible HDMI devices, allowing users to experience the console’s 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech. This feature, along with others, was initially introduced in a beta update and is now available to all PS5 users.

Another significant upgrade brought by the update is the ability to use larger capacity M.2 SSDs. The console now supports SSDs up to 8TB, doubling the previous limit of 4TB, as long as they meet the compatibility requirements. Additionally, players can now assign a second controller as an assist controller, helpful for cooperative gameplay when faced with challenging levels or bosses. The PS5 will recognize two controllers as one device, allowing either controller to control the on-screen action.

The latest update also introduces enhancements for the console’s social features. When being invited to a closed party, users no longer automatically get added to the group, providing more control over social interactions. Furthermore, when joining a party where someone is sharing their screen, users will now see a preview of the shared screen before entering the party. On the inviter’s side, it is now possible to send both closed and open party invitations to multiple players simultaneously. Additionally, under the Friends tab, users can now easily identify friends who are engaging in an activity they can join, as the interface will display a ‘joinable’ icon next to their name.

Alongside these features, the update allows users to stream PS5 or PS4 games from devices running Android TV OS 12. Sony has confirmed compatibility with the 4K Chromecast with Google TV device and the BRAVIA XR A95L model smart TV. Furthermore, users in the US and UK can now utilize new voice commands by saying ‘Hey PlayStation, help’ to quickly access help pages, or ‘Hey PlayStation, what’s new?’ to stay updated on the latest features and the current PS Plus lineup. Finally, for those late-night gaming sessions where silence is key, the update introduces the option to mute or adjust the volume of the beep sound that the console emits when turned on or off. This can be accessed under the ‘Beep Sound’ setting within the System menu in Settings.

Sony continues to enhance the PlayStation 5’s capabilities with these new features and improvements, giving users more control, flexibility, and an enhanced gaming experience. The company remains committed to regularly updating the console’s software to satisfy the evolving needs and preferences of gamers.
