Google is taking steps to enhance the capabilities of its AI chatbot, Bard, to provide users with valuable life advice. The tech giant has been making changes and introducing new features to catch up with OpenAI’s technology. According to The New York Times, Google has assembled over 100 experts with doctorates in various fields to test Bard’s proficiency in answering intimate questions.
To evaluate Bard’s performance, testers were given a prompt that simulated a real-life scenario. The prompt involved a person struggling with finances and wanting to inform a close friend about their inability to afford attending a destination wedding. The testers compared the responses from both ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. While ChatGPT provided a more human-like and empathetic response, Bard’s reply was more practical and concise.
Apart from refining Bard’s life advice capabilities, Google is also working on a tutoring feature to facilitate learning new skills or improving existing ones. Additionally, the company is developing a planning feature that can create personalized budgets, meal plans, and workout routines for users.
Google emphasizes that users should not rely on Bard’s responses as professional advice in areas like medicine, law, or finance. The company has approached AI cautiously, considering potential risks associated with relying on AI for life advice. It aims to prevent users from experiencing a ‘loss of agency’ or perceiving AI as a sentient being. However, Google states that isolated samples of evaluation data do not represent its product roadmap.
While Google’s efforts to enhance Bard’s capabilities in providing life advice are commendable, it remains crucial for users to exercise discretion and consult professionals for matters requiring specialized expertise.
