WipeOut, the iconic anti-gravity racing game for the original PlayStation, holds a special place in the hearts of gamers. However, despite the release of newer versions and remasters, there is no way to play the original WipeOut on modern consoles. Frustrated with this, a dedicated fan took it upon himself to resurrect the game’s leaked source code and make it playable for free in any web browser.
In a blog post, programmer Dominic Szablewski detailed his process of scouring through the leaked WipeOut source code and salvaging the original PlayStation version. He discovered that the code was a messy amalgamation of different versions piled on top of each other, making it a challenging task to extract the true essence of the game. After extensive detective work and effort, Szablewski successfully resurrected a modified playable version of WipeOut with the uncapped frame rate, crisp visuals, and fantastic soundtrack intact.
While Szablewski recommends two other existing PC ports, WipeOut Phantom Edition and an unnamed project by a user named XProger, he believes that his version, which includes the original source code, surpasses them in terms of authenticity. However, he acknowledges that the legality of using the leaked source code is questionable at best.
The fact that the source code has leaked without any substantial action from Sony has led some to label WipeOut as abandonware. With no apparent interest from Sony in remastering or porting the original game, fans are taking matters into their own hands. Szablewski directly challenges Sony, urging them to either let the fan-port exist or take the initiative to create an official remaster.
As of now, it remains to be seen whether Sony will respond to the fan-made port of WipeOut. However, this project showcases the dedication and passion of gamers who are unwilling to let their favorite classics fade away.
