Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick, has responded to the controversy surrounding the $50 price tag for the Nintendo Switch and PS4 release of the 13-year-old game, Red Dead Redemption. In an interview with IGN, Zelnick explained that the price is justified as it aligns with what the company believes is a fair and commercially accurate price for the game.
Many fans have expressed frustration over the high price, especially considering the lack of significant updates and features. Since its initial release in 2010, Red Dead Redemption has not received any quality enhancements, such as 4K visuals, and does not offer a multiplayer option. Additionally, the game is already available on the Xbox Series X in 4K for a lower price of $40.
To justify the higher price, Take-Two is including the Undead Nightmare expansion in the port. Zelnick referred to Undead Nightmare as a ‘great standalone game in its own right’ and believes that bundling it with Red Dead Redemption makes it a valuable offering for consumers.
If Zelnick’s words have convinced you to purchase Red Dead Redemption for $50, you can digitally purchase the game for the Nintendo Switch and PS4 starting on August 17th. A physical release will follow on October 13th.
