Sony has launched a beta testing phase for cloud streaming PS5 games, allowing random PSN users to stream games from the cloud to their PS5 consoles. The service will eventually be included as part of PlayStation Plus Premium. The beta supports a variety of resolutions, including 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. This is a notable advantage over Xbox Cloud Streaming, which currently does not offer a 4K option.
Supported titles in the beta will include PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue and Game Trials, as well as digital PS5 titles that players own. Sony stated that once the feature launches, cloud game streaming for supported PS5 titles will be directly available on PS5 consoles. As a Premium member, this will make it easier for users to jump into their favorite games without the need to download them onto their consoles first.
Earlier this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan mentioned that PlayStation had aggressive plans for the cloud gaming space. He highlighted the growing importance of mobility in gaming habits and stated that the cloud would be essential in exploiting that trend. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida also acknowledged the challenges of cloud-based gaming, describing the technology as ‘very tricky’ but a challenge they are willing to take on.
With the beta testing phase now live, it is clear that Sony is advancing its efforts to expand cloud streaming capabilities for PS5 games. As more games are released for the PS5 console, they plan to add cloud streaming support not only for PS5 titles but also for PS3, PS4, and classic titles available to Premium members.
In the coming months, PlayStation users can expect to see new developments in cloud gaming from Sony as they strive to provide a seamless and convenient gaming experience.
